Right so the first blog entry! The first two weeks in Uganda have been insane! It feels like I've been here so much longer!
Let's go back to the airport where it all started...everyone managed to get ALL their luggage which is a pretty big achievement i think! All 21 of us were looking for our Reps and we caught a glimpse of this white lady so we all follwed her and crowded around her..and she was like, 'guys, i feel like you are following me' Yeah you guessed it - it wasnt her. Poor lady. We all spent a night at our reps house before we went off to our Projects.
Molly and my project is a prmiary school in Kitega. To begin with Benny and Finn (other vols) stayed with us becasue they had to travel more east later on in the week. That was pretty cool, we all just chilled and found our way around Kitega and Lugazi. At night we mainly played cards. I lost every time and have now developed the name 'Justine The Scabby Queen'. Nice.
Our accommodation is amazing! I love it. We have bedroom with bunk beds (there are 3 on top of each other haaa) then we have another room beside that which we use for a wee kitchen, it's ace. Our toilet...well, it's a long drop. But, it's 'all part of the expierence'. It's not as bad as everyone would think.
The food is pretty good around here. It pretty much is all carbs. I have been here for 2 weeks and have already developed a rice belly. Im hoping it wont get any bigger or i wont be able to fit in my clothes...heehee. Molly and I have began to cook all our own food, it's safe to say we are the Jamie Oliver of Uganda :) we're living off soup, pastas, onions, tomatoes and bananas. With the odd chiappties (ok, so we are pretty much addicted to them but they are just SO good!)
It was soooo hot last week! i got myself a tan, however now i am doubting if it is tan or dirt. but the point is its a lot hotter here than where you are :) It is rainy season just now so most days it rains for about 2hours. It's insane. You can stand in it for 20seconds and get soaked all the way through. But the sun soon comes out after so it's not too bad, we just have to avoid the mud puddled roads.
Our project, Kitega Pride School of Infants, has started a bit on the slow side. There are around 15pupils ranging from P1-6. Threre isn't a head teacher as such, but like i say it is only the begininng so hopefully things will start to pick up and we can begin to be proper teachers, yeeehaaa!
Our days are packed to the max: we get up at 7, start to teach at 8till around 4thirty, then we start to get tea ready at 5, and that takes us up untill 7 when it starts to get dark. We have ventured out into the town a few times after dark and it's so busy, the atmosphere is awesome, there are so many people and lots of things for us to buy and taste, which is keeping me really happy:)
'Interesting' things that have happened so far:
- Molly fell down a drain
- I was so ill the first week I thought I was going to die
- We got robbed (everything was recovered though)
- I ate a silver fish...ew
- When i put my card in the ATM the screen said 'good morning Justine Bremner' Possibly the funniest thing ever
- We hand washed our clothes and it was just awful, haaa, my hands are still sore.
- We went to eat in a restaurant and it took an hour and a half for them to make our food...
That is pretty much it so far, well I dont think it is, but I can't really remember the full happs of the first 2 weeks. Next time I do my blog I'll take my diary and give you the full details! :D
Peace.
Miss you all so much.
