Off to MOMBASA! :)
Please, once again excuse the awful spelling! Internet cafe!
After we left Naivasha we travelled to Nairobi to book a night bus to Mombasa. Nairobi is a fasinating city - it is very well bilt up, it reminded me of a european city. However, on the other side it totally contrasts the tall, impressive buildings. There are mass slums, over flowing with poverty stricken people. It is a very sad sight and a reminder that even the richest of Arfican cities are riddled with poverty.
Our bus left at 1-pm and arrived at 5.20am. Even in the early hours Mombasa is roasting! We were staying at Mombasa backpackers which we were delighted to find had a pool and was situated just 5minuted from the beach. Needless to say the morning we arrived we spent and the pool and the afternoon at the beach. the ocean was stunning, white sand, blue sky and clear water. The beach we were at was a hot spot for windsurfing which was amazing to watch. When it was too hot (40degrees) we went into the water which was refreshing but also roasting! I had forgotten how much I loved the beach> the beaches in the south of Mombasa are meant to be even better - the idea of the beaches being better than the one i saw has made me want to travel the coast somtime after my year is over.
Ashley and I went to a place called Haller Park which was a cross between a safari and a zoo. We got up close and personal with some crocodiles which are the the animals that i fear the most - they dont have any tounges! Whats is with that?! Other reptiles we saw included snakes, tortoises and turtles (Ashley attempted to steal a turtle, she failed) We also saw hippos being fed - hippos are actually the funniest looking things i have ever seen in my life. They are really fat but have the shortest legs which make them waddle and look daft. Apperently they are the most dangerous animals...
The best part of the day was at 3pm. I GOT TO FEED GIRAFFES! I couldn't believe it! I was closer to them than i thought i coud ever get. I was pretty lucky in Naivasha, but this time i actually got to touch them. They have the most beautiful eyes with the longest eyelashes and their tounge! Oh my days! It was insane how long they were, then they were eating the pellets out my hands their tounges wrapped around my wrist about 3times over. It was yeat another surreal moment.
On our first night the funniest thing happened. Ashley was sleeping on the top bunk and just after she had settled down and sot all cosy, the bed broke and she fell through to the bottom bunk. Thankfuly noone was in it at the time, it was the funniest thing that has happened in ages! Don't worry, she was fine, it put her off the top bunk though!
All together we stayed for 2 nights and 3 days in Mombasa. I wish I could have stayed longer but we wated to come back. it 26 hours to get back to Kampala. 26 hours on a bus :(
The 8days I was away felt a lot longer abd I enjoyed every minute of it. I expierenced things that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I'm really thankful to those who made it happen.
I love giraffes.
