So a few hours into the road trip, decided that I would stop in Cologne. I'm not exactly sure why other than the fact that I had heard of the city. So there I arrived with my backpacks, no ability to speak German and no idea where I was going or where I was staying. But everything worked out. I found a reasonably priced hostel close to the heart of the city.
Cologne proved to be a very nice city with lots of shops downtown. The main tourist attraction is the Dom Cathedral which is about 20 meters away from the main train station. It's a pretty impressive gothic cathedral. I can honestly say I've never seen a scene of Jesus and skulls on the same wall before. The best part of the cathedral was walking up the main tower consisting of a staircase with over 500 steps. I got to see the bell up close and got to see the bell ring which scared the crap out of me. It felt kind of like a scene from the first Batman. The view from the top was in my opinion spectacular.
Cologne has one of the highest number of pubs per capita in all of Germany which made it a cool atmosphere to walk around in the early evening but things seemed to close down fairly early. 3 days and 2 nights was enough for me so I decided to continue to the eastern part of Germany and its capital city, Berlin.
